You may have read the history of Pizza here on this web site but have you read the fascinating history of AboutPizza.com. Well maybe it is not that interesting but it was accidental. AboutPizza.com was the brainchild of James Theopistos, a web designer whose favorite food is pizza.

 

He developed this site in around 1999 as a way to test some web development concepts and present them to potential clients. The intent at that time was not one in which it was expected to do more than show examples and be used as a portfolio padder. Within a few months AboutPizza.com developed some of its own legs without the assistance of James and began to receive an unexpected amount of traffic after CNN featured it during a story about pizza and suggested it as a source for more information.

 

Within its second and third year AboutPizza.com became one of the most popular pizza websites even through the content had not been updated in some time, passing web sites like pizzahut.com to become number one in the search results for the search term of “pizza”. 

 

Over the next few years, James continued to maintain the site however did not give it the same attention to detail he initially had done. A new site called FinerWorks.com had become his next project started out of his home office and garage which in turn became a full time business leaving AboutPizza.com fend for itself.

 

Today magazines and even some books used AboutPizza.com as a source for information and frequently newspapers will mention the site. At this time the website continues to receive traffic however it no longer has the placement within the search engines it once did. Occasionally James adds a little more to it but mainly just will scratch his head and try to figure out what to do with the site.
